D is for..... Desk

The middle of the summer holidays is no time to be talking about homework, but come September, Mark will be in Year 2 and will be bringing some home. Egads - I don't even want to think about how we're going to fit homework into the mayhem that is the evenings round here. Much more pleasant to think about desks.

Oh e-bay, sometimes you are just too kind! I picked up this little lovely for a tenner. An old primary school, lift the lid, twin desk. Excuse me while I take a moment to wallow in nostalgia, remembering many an hour sat behind something similar. I loved school - what a girlie swot!

Well, I've sanded and waxed and polished and the desk is now up in Mark's bedroom. I need to make a covered foam pad for the chair, to raise him up a little higher, but he's loving it. Perhaps it's because he's yet to realize that it's really for doing homework. Drawing is so much more fun.

do they still make desks for primary schools like that, with the hole for the inkpot in?

I had desks like these in primary school and when i went back to MY school as a teacher years later..they were getting rid of them. I actually found one I had written my name inside! We had cool teachers who encouraged us to sign and date the insides each year.. Oh, if i'd have known i'd have 3 kids now. But i didn't so i didn't take any! How maddening is that!
Cool for Mark!

We had one of these when I was growing up (the joys of a dad working for the school - furniture that was being thrown out!) and HATED it! Couldn't wait to get rid of it! I'm glad you're happier with yours!

I like it a lot! I think it would be a good size too, not too big and bulky for a kids room. Nice work!
Where you actually looking for a desk on ebay, or just browsing?

What a great find on ebay! It is so perfect for a little boy. You did a terrific job refinishing. it.

What an artist your son is!
I'm mighty impressed :)

The desk looks great, you've done a fine renovation! I don't remember having desks like that when I was at school, but the school where I work were getting rid of some recently and didn't get one....wished I had now!

That desk is wonderful!
And I really think I can hear the sirens in that picture of Mark's. Love it.

Ali! Look at that! You made that desk something totally amazing, it looks fantastic. Of course the homework will get done (and happily, right?) with a desk like that. Well, at least it will make the task a little more pleasant. Seriously nice job you did refinishing it.

I loved school too, but I pretended I didn't because I guessed I wasn't supposed to!
The desk is great, especially with the super renovation you've done.
But I'm afraid it's totally outshone by Mark's excellent drawings!

That's what I call a find! You've done a great job of tarting it up.

Those desks where great - with lid lifted up you could communicate in naughty whispers with your friends and the boy that you fancied. Much cheaper than a sneaky text message.

Mark is whizz at drawing. His illustrations would make some fab appliqués.

Wow, love that desk, we had similar but the seat was attached and they are therefore too big for the kid's bedrooms. You did a great job of shining it up - reminds me that I have several similar tasks to attack - think I'll wait for Spring! I love boys drawings and Marks are wonderful, lucky boy to have such a nice place to draw.

Oh I used to have a desk like that in primary school. It was a single desk, howevwer, but it had that same hole for the ink in it! I'd love to find one for sale!

It is beautiful. I want to see when he scratches "mark rules" into the top...oh and then your face when you see it.

perhaps this is something that I did as a child....only in nailpolish.

I love how the desk came up with your tender care. I don't remember mine at school looking quite so lovely, in fact it had a lot more scribble on it.
