Cabo Halter

I'm on a bit of an Amy Butler kick at the moment. The Cabo Halter is not a style I may have chosen a year ago, but one of the pieces of advice from the wardrobe overhaul session I had, was to wear more feminine tops. And this seems to fit the bill.

Unfortunately, the pattern did not fit me without some adjustment (small bust, big arse) which meant sewing the zipper no less than 4 times. But it's all good practice! I also changed the halter neck into straps, because it seemed a little less beachy that way.

The fabric came from my local fabric shop, Masons. It was less than £5 a metre, so I wasn't going to cry if it didn't go according to plan. But I had to go to John Lewis to find the right length invisible zipper. While I was there, I saw the same fabric on sale there for £12 a metre!! How's that for a mark up? Support your independents I say.

i saw this photo over on flickr and ran over to read....i love this top! it looks great on you. i have thought about making this for myself, but wasn't sure about the halter. I do like the straps, though. well done!

Looks great Ali! I wish I had a shop like you have, lovely fabric :)

Wow Ali, that looks great! I love your less beachy version, so flattering and pretty!

the top is gorgeous - I love the straps, the halter element put me off getting the pattern - was it easy to alter? And the perfect top for this surprise turn in the weather.

The fabric is a beautiful choice too - so much for Mr Lewis being 'never knowingly undersold'.

Ali! You look absolutely fabulous! I am really so impressed, you'll be turning heads all over the place!

Nicely done, Ali. I've admired this pattern since it came out but have had my doubts as to whether I could pull it off. Breastfeeding has left the girls markedly bigger (from a c-cup to a ddd-cup...oy) and quite a bit lower than they once were. You may have inspired me to throw caution to the wind and give the Cabo a go though.

I love it! I think you should go ahead and start the Cabo Halter flickr group, because after seeing how nice your's looks, everyone is going to want to make one.

Ok so I'm with you on the backside thing, but hey folk can take me as they find me!! Not sure how you do it but you have a real eye for fabric! And time as well? Kinda ironic though that the time I spend blogging could be spent sewing...priorities I guess!!
Just love the top....

Nice job, Ali! I've been wondering how hard it would be to adapt that pattern. I'm not a halter top person - much more of a tank top person. It's on my shopping list, since I liked the Barcelona Skirt pattern so much.

WOW that looks like it could have come from the Boden catalog or something!
Gorgeous!

Your shirt looks lovely. The adjustments to the pattern seem just right. I might even be tempted to make it.

Fantastic top. Well done you. I am currently struggling with an unofficial bridesmaid's dress. Why oh why do I set my self these challenges?!

Fantastic. It looks so lovely i only make bags at the moment but this photo makes me want to venture into clothes. Although the idea of doing a zip 4 times......I would probably need to invent new words. Well done you

Can I have it? The top (beautiful fabric!) AND the fabric shop! Our nearest fabric shop is really for Indian clothing, so while they have some brilliant fabrics they just aren't particularly practical for bag and pincushin making!

Your projects just keep getting better!

I love it! The strap adjustment is perfect!

That is so darned cute! I stayed away from that pattern because I can't do halter, but the strap modification just might work for me.

Really pretty and I bet it was great in the sun yesterday.

I envy you your fabric shop; all our local independent ones have gone now and we have a choice of a middle sized John Lewis or a very long drive. Or charity shops, which are my new faves!

small busted women rule...look at you all summery!

it's fantastic!!!

gosh, you're getting very good at this sewing stuff...

What a fabulous top - you are very talented. The fabric is fantastic too. What a huge difference in price in John Lewis - and I thought they were 'never knowingly undersold'!! Obviously not.

I have been coverting this pattern for a while and after seeing your version I have decided to get it. It looks lovely on you, the fabric is fantastic.

Ali, it's gorgeous and seems to suit you so well. I'm in awe of your being able to adjust a pattern just like that. The fabric is great too - and John Lewis have really gone doen in my estimation. Whats's with the 'never knowingly undersold'?

I hear you on the bottom area,I have the same problem, although its not a problem for J Lo and Beyonce?
Excellent top it looks fantastic and your fabric choice is to die for, I l-o-v-e it and I am very jealous especially as you only paid £5 a meter.

Nice top - I think it looks great with straps rather than a halter neck. I need to start making myself some tops. I tend to turn out lots of trousers and skirts but I need new summer tops. Specifically tops that I can wear while breastfeeding. I think I can see how I would add a layer to the bust area of this kind of top for easy and discreet access!

I saw your photo over at U-Handblog and had to come and tell you how much I love your top. I like the way you changed the straps - I'd be inclined to do that as well. Great job and very feminine.

I saw this on U-handblog. Looks great. Do you have a picture from the back?
Great job!

I saw this on U-Handblog as well. Great job! This is on my list and I know I'll have to modify with my strange shape (a scary thing for a new sewer). Lovely fabric!

I want to sew my own clothes too! You did a lovely job and really like the fabric you picked out, very nice.

Having seen some of the clothing that's out there to choose from right now, I'm not impressed. I've even had little luck looking at the pattern books. Everything is so baggy and unflattering. I just want some simple classic clothing.

I'm not really a halter top person anymore, but this is really cute, and I've been seeing the pattern around.

I'm also not an accomplished sewer, though I have made my own clothes in the past. This looks doable.

Cute fabric. And a great idea to add straps.
