G is for ... Glamping

Never heard of it? Neither had I until this afternoon. I took the opportunity of Mark being over at a friends house to slip off to Borders with Johnny and pick up the latest Blueprint. And there I discovered it - glamping, or glamorous camping.

Now I may be the last to have heard the term, but I have booked the trip - it started with this innocent little newspaper clipping:

Staying on a working farm - the boys would love it. And then I hit the website and I was sold.

Tents, yes, but with double beds - proper beds people - and wood burning stoves.

I'm liking this idea better and better. Visions of wafting round my wood burning stove, rustling up supper while my children gambol in the fresh air.

So we're going glamping in Wiltshire this summer. And don't be thinking I am some girly wuss who is not acquainted with the inside of a proper tent - I spent a very memorable summer mapping glacial meltwater flow in the wilds of Norway. That glacial meltwater was the closest thing I saw to a shower in 3 weeks - by the end of that, my rucksack was practically walking by itself. Believe me when I tell you, I've done my fair share of tent-time.

So a bit older and a bit wiser now - glamping all the way!

I love this! I am definitely going to investigate it for later in the year - maybe in our autumn vacation. It looks fabulous!

Really wanted to join in the a-z meme, but didn't get there in time. This is what happens when one ignores bloglines for a few days! I suppose I could just join in at H...

That tent is nicer than my house! I'm not joking either...

It sounds fun and looks enticing, but I'm such a wussy. I'd either need lots of fans or some good ol' AC. I've become a bit air conditioning obsessed this year. It's been really hot and humid and we don't have it, so I spend a lot of time wishing I did!

Friends at school have just been to one of their other sites and thought it every bit as good as they had hoped it would be. Apparently there was a bed in a cupboard that the kids were enthralled by. That and the farm animals made it a wonderful holiday.

Hope you all have a fantastic time glamping it up!

What a cool idea. I especially love the idea of having real beds while camping. Can you pull the tent back so you can lie in your beds under the stars? Dunno if you ever went camping in Qatar but when I was a kid we used to head out to a beach near Dukhan and watch the falling stars at night.

I've done the real camping thingy many, many times. And there is nothing wrong with some glamping thrown in.

Looks like you'll have alot of fun.

'mapping glacial melt water flow'? What an interesting and full life you've led! I think you've earned your glamping trip, which sounds heavenly, btw. I may hate camping, but I think glamping would be right up my street!

now this is my idea of camping. what about the shower/toilet facilities? hot shower and comfy seat is all I need.

Oooh I love the picture - I want to go glamping too! I think the closest I'm going to get is a cath kidston tent in the garden but there we go, I shall try not to feel too jealous of the woodburning stove, gorgeous farm table and sheer luxury of so much space! You'll definitely have a fab time.

What a fabulous idea. I'm sure you'll have a super time - in an area with plenty of beautiful scenery and places to visit. Make sure you visit the flight of 23 locks on the canal at Devizes. It's an amazing sight.

Look forward to hearing all about it, with plenty of photos.

I thought you said you'd be pressed up against the side of the tent with the water pouring down?....
Love the look of glamping. i might even persuade Mr 'I don't stay anywhere where you need a mac to go to the toilet' to give that a go!

definitely my kind of camping!

Ooooh, I could actually go for that. I cannot camp in a normal tent - correction, I cannot camp with my husband in a normal tent as he is so tall. He sleeps diagonally across the wretched thing and I end up huddled in one corner freezing to death and cursing whoever invented tents in the first place ...
